On the trail of the “Highwayman”….

15107_10200907173392369_462729533_n….a bit more information on the 1960s British champion, Uggaton Highway 2nd.  Our Cornwall lass, Juliet Cleave, came up with the picture and wondered who he was.  Wooz added some detail from the old herd books (including the fact that he’s an ancestor of one of the bulls calves we now have on the ground here).

In case you missed her comment yesterday, I’ve pulled up the latest information from Juliet:

Have just spoken to William Brent (of the now dispersed Clampit Herd): his family bought Uggaton Highwayman 2nd as an 18 month bull at the Devon Society annual sale & worked him “as much as we could” within the Clampit herd.  The breeders were the Down family (James & brother Dudley) from the county of Devon.

Mr Brent said Highwayman’s only fault was that he could have had marginally straighter back legs; but this (I feel) may have been splitting hairs as the Brents showed Highwayman at county and national level throughout the bull’s prime – and was rarely not show champion.

OK David, educate me. Any straighter back legs and I would have considered it a structural fault. Don’t we want the legs to be under the animal and straight with the back legs at a 45degree angle from the knee down?

I can only refer you to Juliet: “Splitting hairs”.

Or just the typical British modesty. Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to come up with another picture to get a better look at the legs. But we’re still trying.
