• Just the latest…

…a summing up of a half dozen great lines combined just on the sires side here.  A special delivery to Thistle Hill today. Our natural service calves will be coming now that we’ve concluded with our artificial breeding portion of the herd.  It’s been a memorable season for Church who concluded his second annual efforts with successes such as Potherridge President, Champson Defender and Tilbrook Sunset.  Add in some bulls that have only recently passed their first birthday and Thistle Hill now is the repository of the most complete traditional pure English champion Devon’s available anywhere.  Why not treat yourself to a Thistle Hill Christmas.

  • The Thistle Hill Alumni club…

…posted by Brooke Henley on Facebook today. Brooke says she watched the calving from her window while enjoying her morning coffee. The sire is Thistle Hill Equinox…with seven bull calves and four heifers so far this year. Two to go. Our relationship with Brooke and husband Tom and their Spring Pastures farm in Maryland goes back many years. They’ve built their herd around Thistle Hill genetics. Equinox is the son of our THF Churchill and the grandson of perhaps the finest cow in modern Devon history, Tilbrook Cashtiller. Not only did she win best of show every time she entered but her bull calves topped the English sales three consecutive…

  • Our cows…

…are built around the great English cow Tilbrook Cashtiller.  She won three consecutive national grand championships and a host of ribbons and silver.  And to top it off three of her sons were the top selling bulls in the annual Devon breeders sale.  We’re indebted to Tibrook’s Gavin Hunter…who again today is serving as president of the British Society …for permitting us to flush Cash twice! TDA 7 was out of that first flush 12 years ago and not showing her age.  Her sire was another British champion, Cutcombe Jaunty.  Cashtiller is gone now but we have several of her daughters and granddaughters and other descendants in our herd…and some…

  • The one that got away…

…almost.  Some years ago we were very pleased with our Sunset bulls from Gavin Hunter ‘s Tilbrook Herd in England.  So were others and one day we realized we had sold the last of the blood line. Thanks to AI tanks we have just solved the problem.  Church found some Sunset semen in an old Folly Farm tank and Sunset is back on our pastures…in the form of this three-month old bull calf. Making this an all the more exciting mating…we AI-ed Sunset to our new young Tulip cow.  She’s from the Ashott Barton herd in England. We’ve barely finished this year’s calving and it’s already time to start planning…

  • Just a quick tour…

…this past weekend.  (Warning: no pigs; they’re off at freezer camp) First stop the shipping pen where this four-year old bull is waiting for his ride to a commercial operation in southwest Virginia.  Clark Family farms have been good friends and customers for a number of years. The Clarks also selected one of our young English bulls with Tilbrook Cashtiller genetics.  For three years running Cash’s sons topped the English national sales. At one of our auxiliary farms we checked the progress of some of our other yearlings…three pure English calves and their dams.  In recent years we’ve found it best to separate the bull and heifers calves at about…

  • The family that works cattle together…

…well gets dirty together if nothing else.  Pregnancy checking is a kind of tense moment in the year.  Not only do you hope for a high rate of pregnancy…but for matings you’ve invested in embryo transplants and artificial insemination. This year we’re checking a total of 32 cows…a mix of regular Devon plus our pure traditional English Devon.  The wranglers are grandson Church, his Dad Curt and his uncle Church.  First mamas and calves are called in and then sorted in separate pens.  The young will get permanent tags and tattoos and vaccinations.  Some of the bulls that don’t meet Thistle Hill standards are also converted to steers. At the…
