{"id":637,"date":"2012-04-08T16:44:56","date_gmt":"2012-04-08T20:44:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/?p=637"},"modified":"2012-04-09T08:31:14","modified_gmt":"2012-04-09T12:31:14","slug":"were-off-to-the-races","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/were-off-to-the-races\/","title":{"rendered":"We&#8217;re off to the races&#8230;."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_9548A-EDS1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-638\" title=\"IMG_9548A-EDS[1]\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_9548A-EDS1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>\u00a0Once again this year we were one of the sponsors of the Old Dominion Hunt&#8217;s point-to-point races.\u00a0 This time though we had something else on the menu besides food, drink and run.\u00a0 Thanks to great friends we raffled off some prizes to benefit the Wounded Warriors Project.<\/p>\n<p>Wooz and I and Church and Barbara are\u00a0pleased to report we raised $3,534 for this good cause.\u00a0 We particularly want to thank the owners of the Black Horse Inn, who contributed a stay at their fine inn.\u00a0 The other prizes were a massage from Renata Shields of Orlean, spice packages from Tolsons Appliance Center\u00a0and, of course, meat from Thistle Hill.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_5019.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-639\" title=\"IMG_5019\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_5019-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Among the guests (in the red Nationals&#8217; cap) the Inspector General of the Navy, Admiral James Wisecup.\u00a0 No he wasn&#8217;t keeping an eye on our Wounded Warriors money.\u00a0 I call him &#8220;Phil&#8221; and he&#8217;s my nephew.\u00a0 He&#8217;s surrounded by his four daughters and son and if you enlarge the picture you&#8217;ll see the Navy pilot one of his girl&#8217;s is dating.\u00a0 He&#8217;s L\/JG Tom Kilcline.<\/p>\n<p>Phil, on an earlier assignment, was commodore of the USS Stennis task force in the Pacific Fleet.\u00a0 You&#8217;d think he&#8217;d know all about Navy pilots and wouldn&#8217;t let one get in his personal landing pattern.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve watched Phil with pride as his career moved from the Naval Academy up the ladder to three stars.\u00a0 The country is lucky we can still find men like Phil and Tom to serve.<\/p>\n<p>Also in attendance, and representing the latest generation, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/314182_10100523460318376_25521463_47009335_1119971671_n1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-644\" title=\"314182_10100523460318376_25521463_47009335_1119971671_n\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/314182_10100523460318376_25521463_47009335_1119971671_n1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>was Rowan Mayo.\u00a0 He is, as the whole blogosphere knows, my great-grandson and (to be honest)\u00a0the only member of the latest generation.\u00a0 But with 14 grandchildren, that&#8217;s not going to last long.\u00a0 Grandma Linda and Uncle Matt behind.\u00a0 Rowan looks ready to work to me.<\/p>\n<p><em>(thanks to Gretchen Shorter and Don Kunnard for the pictures!)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0Once again this year we were one of the sponsors of the Old Dominion Hunt&#8217;s point-to-point races.\u00a0 This time though we had something else on the menu besides food, drink and run.\u00a0 Thanks to great friends we raffled off some prizes to benefit the Wounded Warriors Project.
