It was 10 years ago that I walked out in a pasture Cornwall, England with a grizzled old farmer named Ivan Rowe.\u00a0 Ivan was introducing me to the best herd of cows I had ever seen! More than that he was offering me my pick to breed…flush the embryos…and ship back to the States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It took \nat least an hour to walk through the herd but it wasn\u2019t a difficult \nchoice.  I spotted my candidate almost immediately and said \u201chow about \nthat one\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell you did choose the best,\u201d Ivan grumped.\u00a0 And from that point on he\u2019s always called me \u201cmate\u201d…the highest honor I\u2019ve ever received.\u00a0 Ivan is a lifelong judge of cattle, respected by the leading breeds.\u00a0 For any breeder, especially an American, to be Ivan Rowe\u2019s mate is better than any college degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cow was Goldings Norah and we transported her to UK Sires near Penzance.\u00a0 (Yes Gilbert and Sullivan fans, that Penzance!). The mating was to a bull that is the basis of our pure traditional English Devon herd:\u00a0 Ashott Barton Millennium Falcon.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first flush gave us 16 excellent embryos; and the second another dozen.\u00a0 No cow has been that prolific for us.\u00a0 And the two year old bull, TDA 35, above is one of her progeny, set to go to work at Thistle Hill. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
