{"id":50,"date":"2011-10-13T07:22:42","date_gmt":"2011-10-13T12:22:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/?p=50"},"modified":"2011-10-13T09:09:22","modified_gmt":"2011-10-13T14:09:22","slug":"welcome-englishmen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/welcome-englishmen\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Welcome, Welcome Englishmen&#8221;&#8230;."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230;were the words the Indian Samoset\u00a0shouted to greet the Pilgrims when they arrived in the New World.\u00a0 Unfortunately, Devon came on the next boat and missed that historic moment.<\/p>\n<p>But today is a kind of historic moment for Thistle Hill Farm.\u00a0 We&#8217;re saying &#8220;welcome Englishmen&#8221;&#8230;bulls and heifers&#8230;.to our shores.\u00a0 Some time ago, on one of several scouting expeditions to England, we came upon a\u00a0cow that was the most beautiful Devon we had ever seen.\u00a0 Small wonder; turned out she was the great English champion Tilbrook Cashtiller.<\/p>\n<p>With two American friends, John Forelle of New York and Bill Walker of South Carolina, we determined that we had to bring Cashtiller genetics to the United States.\u00a0 So working with Cashtiller&#8217;s breeder, Gavin Hunter, we flushed her to a bull that was another English champion, Cutcombe Jaunty.<\/p>\n<p>The fertilized eggs were frozen and brought here&#8230;implanted in recipient cows&#8230;and now the first calves are being born.\u00a0 The calving isn&#8217;t complete, but so far we have an even split of bulls and heifers and expect 9 calves in all.\u00a0 And if these youngsters turn out as well as we hope, we have more embryos standing by.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s lots more to this story.\u00a0 But we wanted to let you know about an exciting day for us here at Thistle Hill.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230;were the words the Indian Samoset\u00a0shouted to greet the Pilgrims when they arrived in the New World.\u00a0 Unfortunately, Devon came on the next boat and missed that historic moment.
