{"id":498,"date":"2012-02-22T08:00:53","date_gmt":"2012-02-22T13:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/?p=498"},"modified":"2012-02-22T08:01:25","modified_gmt":"2012-02-22T13:01:25","slug":"on-our-home-page","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/on-our-home-page\/","title":{"rendered":"On our home page&#8230;."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/688.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-499\" title=\"688\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/688-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>We wanted to alert those who skip our Home Page and come direct to this blog that we&#8217;ve posted some pictures of our 688 line-bred calves there.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re not entirely convinced that breeding a sire (even one as good as Rotokawa 688) to his daughter is a good idea.\u00a0 But in these matters, at least, we think it&#8217;s a good idea to try something for ourselves before making a decision.<\/p>\n<p>So far, the results have been excellent.\u00a0 Of the 10 embryos implanted, we got seven calves&#8230;two males and five females.\u00a0 One of the bull calves died at about six months and, while we think it was the shock of a nearby lightning strike, we cannot rule out what is called a &#8220;fatal gene&#8221; which does show up in this kind of mating.<\/p>\n<p>We would grade four of the five females good to excellent and, since\u00a0recipient mothers are involved in this program, we&#8217;re not ready to rule out that the fifth will yet make up ground for what might have been poorer nutrition from its dam.\u00a0 In any event, we have another year to decide on that and the next breeding decision.\u00a0 Typically, these heifers would be mated with another close relative, an uncle or a brother.\u00a0 That&#8217;s when it will become interesting.<\/p>\n<p>What we are doing with this, of course, is concentrating the genetics; we trust,\u00a0 good genetics.\u00a0 But, if we are mistaken in our judgment, we could also be concentrating the genetics of traits we don&#8217;t want.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We wanted to alert those who skip our Home Page and come direct to this blog that we&#8217;ve posted some pictures of our 688 line-bred calves there.
