{"id":4368,"date":"2015-07-14T11:20:07","date_gmt":"2015-07-14T15:20:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/?p=4368"},"modified":"2015-07-14T11:47:56","modified_gmt":"2015-07-14T15:47:56","slug":"recharging-our-batteries-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/recharging-our-batteries-4\/","title":{"rendered":"Recharging our batteries &#8211; 4&#8230;."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20121002_29.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-4369\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20121002_29-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"20121002_29\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>&#8230;.took us next on our annual sabbatical\u00a0deep into Cornwall&#8230;.land of Doc Martin&#8230;and Poldark&#8230;and Juliet Cleave.\u00a0 Juliet&#8217;s infectious high spirits captivated us on our very first bus ride in the area.\u00a0 (she\u00a0was the local tour director) So it was pre-ordained that we&#8217;d invite her and her husband, Chris, to join our Traditional Devon\u2122 group.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150612_231.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-4370\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150612_231-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"20150612_231\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Speaking of Poldark, the Cleaves relationship is straight out of a BBC romance.\u00a0 For years they cast longing glances across the stone walls separating their two family farms.\u00a0 Finally, after too many years of delay, Juliet\u00a0got up enough nerve to embolden Chris to propose.<\/p>\n<p>Their Kew Herd has blossomed, too, and is now one of the premier operations in English Devon country.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150612_222.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-4371\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150612_222-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"20150612_222\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 One reason is a string of outstanding bulls from Tilbrook, Ashott Barton and the late Ken Farmer&#8217;s Bywood herd.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve had our eye on Bywood Cracker for some time but unfortunately that dreaded Schmallenburg virus turned up in his bloodstream, too, and that kills any chance for export.<\/p>\n<p>The disease itself has run its course and the animals infected are now immune.\u00a0 But health officials in the US still are not ready to give the green light.\u00a0 They want to see &#8220;more history&#8221;.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150612_249.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-4372\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150612_249-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"20150612_249\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Juliet and Chris continue to produce outstanding young\u00a0calves for domestic sale only.\u00a0 And we can only hope that someday, a Cracker son will pass the health exam.
