{"id":4348,"date":"2015-07-05T08:29:44","date_gmt":"2015-07-05T12:29:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/?p=4348"},"modified":"2015-07-05T08:34:49","modified_gmt":"2015-07-05T12:34:49","slug":"re-charging-our-batteries-3-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/re-charging-our-batteries-3-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Re-charging our batteries &#8211; 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230;.our visit to the new two of our partners had to be short because of the intrusion of real life.\u00a0 Margaret Elliott&#8217;s mother had been hospitalized unexpectedly earlier that day&#8230;and Angus and Joy Cottey were both recovering from very serious illness.<\/p>\n<p>We confined ourselves then to brief courtesy calls.\u00a0 We were<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150612_161-e1436097338699.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-4345\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150612_161-e1436097338699-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"20150612_161\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>\u00a0pleased to see that our<em> Falcon&#8217;s <\/em>brother<em>,<\/em> <em>Millennium Monte<\/em>, who had been ill himself, was doing much better now that he was under the care of Margaret at her Cutcombe Farm.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150612_139.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-4354\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150612_139-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"20150612_139\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>We also paid our respects to one of the grand old bulls of English Devon, <em>Bywood Jasper<\/em>, who is living out his days in semi-retirement at Cutcombe.\u00a0 <em>Jasper&#8217;s<\/em> breeder, Ken Farmer, passed away not long ago and, by coincidence,\u00a0two of <em>Jasper&#8217;s<\/em> sons have wound up at our colleague&#8217;s farms:\u00a0 <em>Cracker<\/em> at the Kew herd and <em>Christophe<\/em>r at the Goldings herd.\u00a0 More about that in our next post.<\/p>\n<p>Continuing our &#8220;convalescent tour&#8221;, we stopped at Garradon<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150612_179-2-e1436098677309.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-4350\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150612_179-2-e1436098677309-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"20150612_179 (2)\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>\u00a0and were relieved to find both Angus Cottey and his wife Joy as vigorous as ever.\u00a0 Still, sadly, they told us they had decided they couldn&#8217;t maintain the pace any longer and planned to disperse the herd.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a great loss for Devon in England as well as <em>Traditional Devon America\u2122 <\/em>because the Cottey&#8217;s have been doing really well in recent shows and developing an outstanding herd.\u00a0 By coincidence another of our friends, Juliet Cleave, visited the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/10671330_721800611299768_3993582128590973612_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-4351\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/10671330_721800611299768_3993582128590973612_n-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"10671330_721800611299768_3993582128590973612_n\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Cotteys and took this picture of one of their cows.\u00a0 One look and you&#8217;ll see why we think it&#8217;s a tragedy that the Cotteys feel they have to leave Devon&#8217;s ranks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230;.our visit to the new two of our partners had to be short because of the intrusion of real life.\u00a0 Margaret Elliott&#8217;s mother had been hospitalized unexpectedly earlier that day&#8230;and Angus and Joy Cottey were both recovering from very serious illness.
