{"id":3095,"date":"2014-01-28T06:59:03","date_gmt":"2014-01-28T11:59:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/?p=3095"},"modified":"2014-01-28T07:06:26","modified_gmt":"2014-01-28T12:06:26","slug":"new-journalism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/new-journalism\/","title":{"rendered":"The &#8220;new&#8221; journalism&#8230;."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230;.here comes &#8220;the old fogey&#8221; again.\u00a0 You&#8217;re warned!<\/p>\n<p>Back when I was learning to be a reporter, there was a course you had to take at Northwestern&#8217;s Medill School of Journalism that was based around a book with the title &#8220;How to Lie with Statistics&#8221;.\u00a0 The idea was that great lies were always buried in those supposedly cold numbers put out by our government&#8230;.at all levels.<\/p>\n<p>I was reminded of that when I read that the new Farm Bill was going to &#8220;save&#8221; $20- to 30-billion over the next five years.\u00a0 Now that&#8217;s not the Congress that I know very well.\u00a0 But that&#8217;s the headline I am seeing today in most of the big newspapers.<\/p>\n<p>However, one reporter (another Old Fogey?) took the trouble to actually analyze the numbers and it turns out the new Farm Bill about to go to a vote will increase spending by more than $600-billion.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/369558\/cuts-farm-bill-still-leave-it-more-expensive-previous-one-veronique-de-rugy\">http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/369558\/cuts-farm-bill-still-leave-it-more-expensive-previous-one-veronique-de-rugy<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This Old Fogey concludes that one reason\u00a0we&#8217;re in so much trouble is that, from the day when young reporters were taught &#8220;the government will lie with statistics and watch out!&#8221;&#8230;.reporters today are taught how they should report\u00a0what they think the\u00a0world <em>should<\/em> be like.\u00a0 Really.\u00a0 Columbia University school of &#8220;journalism&#8221;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230;.here comes &#8220;the old fogey&#8221; again.\u00a0 You&#8217;re warned!
