{"id":2562,"date":"2013-09-09T07:23:09","date_gmt":"2013-09-09T11:23:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/?p=2562"},"modified":"2013-09-09T07:23:09","modified_gmt":"2013-09-09T11:23:09","slug":"friends-old-new","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/friends-old-new\/","title":{"rendered":"Friends&#8230;old and new&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/IMG_2005.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-2563\" alt=\"IMG_2005\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/IMG_2005-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>&#8230;We&#8217;re just back from 10 days in Germany, guests of Kurt and Gisela Volkert.\u00a0 Kurt was a combat cameraman for CBS News when we met in Viet Nam in 1967.\u00a0 We&#8217;re joined here by our new friend,\u00a0a well-known German still photographer, Gaby Sommer.<\/p>\n<p>We met Gaby for lunch at an old castle overlooking the Rhine&#8230;not far from the Lorelei rock which is around the bend to the right.\u00a0 We spent three hours telling tall tales when not devoting full attention to an assortment of beers, wines and food.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, sight-seeing on the trip&#8212;in the Rhine valley up to Amsterdam&#8212;took a back seat to sampling more than a dozen sausages and at least twice that many wines and beers.\u00a0 My favorite:\u00a0\u00a0Krombacher.\u00a0 Better over there than here.\u00a0 I kept saying I was doing research for this blog.<\/p>\n<p>Kurt eventually\u00a0put down his camera to become a bureau chief and producer for CBS.\u00a0 Today he paints and owns a studio and gallery in Konigswinter.\u00a0 Gaby, whose credits include the AP, Reuters and just about every major paper in Germany, now devotes her talents to environmental subjects.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230;We&#8217;re just back from 10 days in Germany, guests of Kurt and Gisela Volkert.\u00a0 Kurt was a combat cameraman for CBS News when we met in Viet Nam in 1967.\u00a0 We&#8217;re joined here by our new friend,\u00a0a well-known German still photographer, Gaby Sommer.
