We’ve mentioned this before.\u00a0 The Feds are planning to use new, so-called “food safety” regulations to penalize small farmers.\u00a0 We say “penalize” because the problems in the food industry…safety and other things…are not because of small farms and farmers’ markets.<\/p>\n

Just last week, lettuce grown by giant farms in Mexico and sold in giant restaurant chains like Red Lobster and Olive Garden were found to be contaminated.\u00a0 But it’s a lot easier for the feds to go after the farmers market\u00a0over at Massie’s Corner.<\/p>\n

The result of the new regulations, according to one study, will be a 50% reduction in the profits of the little guy.\u00a0 Actually, most little guys, like Thistle Hill, will just go out of the meat business rather than comply.\u00a0 That leaves the field open to those giants….and industrial food…which is the whole point of federal policy.\u00a0 Here’s a roundup of the key elements in the story:<\/p>\n
