{"id":1886,"date":"2013-04-02T07:02:57","date_gmt":"2013-04-02T11:02:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/?p=1886"},"modified":"2013-04-02T07:02:57","modified_gmt":"2013-04-02T11:02:57","slug":"in-praise-of-fat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thistlehill.net\/wpblog\/in-praise-of-fat\/","title":{"rendered":"In praise of fat&#8230;."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230;.not the kind we carry around, but the kind we eat.\u00a0 For years, and particularly when I pretended I was dieting, I would try to eliminate fatty foods and butter from my meals.\u00a0 That included carefully trimming the fat off the steaks I ate, even Thistle Hill steaks.<\/p>\n<p>I have concluded that, for me at least, it was wasted effort.\u00a0 Fat, according to the latest research, is good for you.\u00a0 The right kind of fat.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a recent article that\u00a0 provoked outrage in the comments section from people still wedded to the propaganda rammed down our throats by Big Ag and Big Government for at least 70 years.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424127887323393304578358681822758600.html?mod=WSJ_hpp_LEFTTopStories#articleTabs%3Dcomments\">http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424127887323393304578358681822758600.html?mod=WSJ_hpp_LEFTTopStories#articleTabs%3Dcomments<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now my own experience since last Thanksgiving confirms this new thinking about fat.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve lost\u00a045 pounds, basically by cutting down on carbohydrates, particularly sugar but also potatoes, rice and pasta.\u00a0 What I have not cut down on is fat.<\/p>\n<p>Breakfast every day generally includes two eggs and several strips of bacon.\u00a0 Lunch features more meat:\u00a0 beef and pork.\u00a0 And dinner, still more meat though twice a week we have wild fish.\u00a0 If I have had one dietary rule it is this:\u00a0 don&#8217;t trim the fat!<\/p>\n<p>Early in the diet, I was counting calories&#8230;even used one of those internet services.\u00a0 But, then, at the urging of our daughter&#8230;a cancer surgeon and director of integrative medicine at Baylor Medical Center&#8230;I switched to a kind of modified Paleo diet and soon threw away the calorie counter.\u00a0 (That internet service still occasionally contacts me asking\u00a0if I need &#8220;help&#8221;.)<\/p>\n<p>Now, I not only don&#8217;t count calories, I don&#8217;t weigh myself regularly.\u00a0 I did recently get on a scale after a series of business lunches and dinners on the road, that featured too much red wine, and overly-generous servings.\u00a0 I did push the potatoes to the side, passed on the bread\u00a0and drank coffee without sugar.\u00a0 That&#8217;s all.\u00a0 Ate too much; drank too much.\u00a0 Loved the fatty meat.\u00a0 The result:\u00a0 down four more pounds!<\/p>\n<p>Admittedly this is all anecdotal.\u00a0 What has worked for me might not work for everyone.\u00a0 I&#8217;m certainly not recommending gluttony as a way of life.\u00a0 But I am suggesting that it is just possible that the common wisdom on dieting is all wrong.\u00a0 We may be able to lose weight without all the self-sacrifice the experts say is good for us!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230;.not the kind we carry around, but the kind we eat.\u00a0 For years, and particularly when I pretended I was dieting, I would try to eliminate fatty foods and butter from my meals.\u00a0 That included carefully trimming the fat off the steaks I ate, even Thistle Hill steaks.
