The European horse meat scandal has now spread to the United States, but with a twist.\u00a0 In Europe, they’ve discovered that some brands of prepared beef dishes actually have been using horse meat.\u00a0 Actually, there is some history of the use of horse meat there; sauerbraten, for instance, technically should be made using it and our aversion to its use is based in culture, not really nutrition.<\/p>\n

Still, in the United States, it’s illegal to serve horse meat but in California, a local tv station has discovered horse meat is being exported.<\/p>\n

What the story doesn’t point out, is that it would be easy….and profitable….for a foreign supplier to turn this around and ship it right back into the US burger supply.\u00a0\u00a0 Much of what is sold at local stores…and fast food restaurants…is a burger concoction using all sorts of scraps ground in from foreign sources.<\/p>\n

Burger King recently discovered it had received horse meat from one of its suppliers and has started dna-testing its meat.<\/p>\n

The answer to all this need we point out is:\u00a0 eat local; know your farmer.<\/p>\n
